1919 House Restored to Original Condition

The Barder House

Situated in a residential area of distinguished older homes, Braun & Steidl Architects’ Akron offices were housed in the Barder House (designed in 1919 by architects Harpster & Bliss).

The three-story building was in a state of extensive decay and neglect. Incompatible materials including vinyl tile, acoustic ceilings, and gypsum board partitions had been added to the interior. Deterioration included leaking roofs, peeling paint, tarnished chandeliers, and overgrown plantings.

The building was completely restored to its original condition, and the process culminated with its placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
