Pedestrian Bridge Replacement

Replacement of Beverly Depot Station Garage Pedestrian Bridge

The existing pedestrian bridge connecting the parking garage that services the MBTA train station was struck by a vehicle resulting in severe damage to the superstructure. The existing bridge was a simply supported single span structure with two concrete tee beams. The replacement bridge utilizes the existing substructure and replaces the superstructure with rolled steel beams composite with a concrete deck. The new superstructure adds an additional 5-3/8” to the underclearance.

PRIME AE designed the bridge unit in a way that many of the elements could be fabricated and assembled in-shop and transported and installed as a unit to minimize disturbance and time on-site. This also provided benefits to controlled pieces of the construction including accelerating concrete curing time to meet the deadline and successfully transport in winter.

The bridge project was completed under the MBTA On-Call Urgent Construction Repair contract due to the nature of the insurance requirements for the project completion deadline. PRIME AE completed the construction phase services within an unusual fast track pace for response to contactor inquiries and shop drawing review.
