Serving over 135,000 vehicles per day, the Anacostia Freeway bridges over Nicholson Street play a critical role in supporting the smooth flow of traffic in the bustling DC Metro area. Years of relentless usage without proper maintenance resulted in significant deterioration of the bridge deck and adjoining ramps, posing risks to commuters relying on this heavily traffic route.
Anticipation was that the bridge would be inaccessible during a lengthy rehabilitation. Recognizing the urgency, PRIME AE joined forces with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT). Conducting a comprehensive concept design study, our team identified the optimal solution to restore safety and efficiency: Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC).
Through ABC, the mainline bridge was replaced in four stages of accelerated construction, minimizing disruption to traffic on DC-295. Additionally, PRIME AE’s advanced construction methods and effective stakeholder communication reduced the predicted four-month closure of ramp bridges to only six consecutive weekends.
This successful collaboration focused on the reliable usability of the bridges for another 75 years, meeting DDOT’s goals while employing cutting-edge technology and construction techniques.
