Brooklyn, a neighborhood in the city of Jacksonville’s downtown area has experienced a remarkable transformation. Once predominantly residential, Brooklyn has now become a thriving district, attracting new commercial, recreational, and dining development, especially along the St. Johns River. A thoroughfare within the neighborhood, Park Street plays a role in connecting the community. Recognizing the potential, the Downtown Investment Authority (DIA) identified this roadway corridor where improvements could spark further growth and rejuvenation. The street underwent a rehabilitation aimed at enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connectivity while improving vehicular safety. The PRIME AE team contributed traffic and landscape design services to the Park Street revitalization. Once a four-lane roadway with no auxiliary lanes and limited sidewalks, Park Street under our design was reduced to two lanes to make way for one row of parking and pedestrian zones. Complimentary landscape architecture services provided new landscaping, hardscape design, and street furnishings. Innovative landscape design elements included open stormwater conveyance throughout the landscape features and root barriers with specialized root ball anchoring systems.
The rehabilitation of Park Street creates a safer, more inviting, and vibrant streetscape for the benefit of pedestrians, cyclists, visitors, and residents.
