The Franklin County project identified as FRA-70-14.54 involves the extension reconstruction of a section of I-70 between 4th and Miller Street in the City of Columbus. Project 2E encompasses various critical components, including the reconfiguration of the eastern I-70/I-71 system interchange, local street access modifications to the interstates, and the construction of four complex bridges and eleven retaining walls within the interchange.
Among the notable structures are the composite, steel girder, spiral curved Fulton St bridge, and two tangent drilled shaft walls, demonstrating the project’s engineering complexity. Additionally, the project involved a range of activities, such as the application of cellular backfill on the I-70 mainline structure, coordination with key stakeholders like the City of Columbus and Children’s Hospital, the reconstruction of trunk line storm sewers, replacement of freeway lighting systems, and the resurfacing and reconstruction of city street intersections. Traffic control upgrades were also implemented to improve connectivity with the access roads.
PRIME CM&S took the lead as the project’s primary consultant, responsible for all inspection and engineering services provided to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). Our expertise and guidance delivered on the successful execution of the project, while maintaining adherence to ODOT’s rigorous standards.
With our team at the helm, the I-70 reconstruction project promises to transform the transportation landscape of Columbus, enhancing infrastructure, improving traffic flow, and fostering connectivity between vital city corridors.
