Bridge Replacement of State Route
NB-709 State Road 3013 over the PA Turnpike
PRIME AE led the preliminary and final design for the replacement of the existing, two-lane wide, 86-foot long, single-span, steel I-beam structure carrying State Road (SR) 3013 over the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
This bridge provides substandard under-clearance to the Turnpike. In addition to raising the low chord elevation, PRIME AE investigated options that did not raise the profile of SR 3013. Steel and concrete superstructures supported on stub and full-height abutments in single and two-span configurations were investigated.
Ultimately, a two-span steel option was chosen as the most cost-effective means of meeting the clearance requirements without raising the profile. The replacement structure will carry two lanes of traffic and two sidewalks. Entrances to a restaurant, a bank, and Turnpike emergency access roads occupy three quadrants of the site.
SR3013 will remain open throughout construction via half-width staging.
