Improving the Atlantic Gateway

Backlick Road

Averaging 3,600 vehicles a day, Fairfax County Parkway at Backlick Road (VA Route 617) provides an important connection in one of the most congested areas in northern Virginia, yet the two-lane bridge over the CSX Railroad did not have enough horizontal or vertical clearance for CSX Railroad’s projected increased capacity.

Preliminary studies showed that replacing this bridge with a slightly higher one was on the critical path of an accelerated schedule. With only one detour route existing for local industrial and commercial businesses, a traffic impact study, modeling, crash, and sight distance analyses were undertaken resulting in a newly designed temporary roadway to provide additional access.

PRIME AE developed a full design package including plans, specifications, quantities, and estimates for the project, and assisted with public outreach. The plans included roadway, drainage, temporary traffic control, signing and marking plans, and bridge design plans. The project was completed on time, within an accelerated schedule, and within budget.
