Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, opened in 1970, has become one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, and the only locally based academic medical center in central Pennsylvania. Focused on advanced care for cancer, heart, vascular and neurological conditions, it is Pennsylvania’s only nationally verified Level I Trauma Center for both children and adults.
To keep critical medical equipment up to date, PRIME AE managed and provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology design engineering services for the renovation of the SPEC CT scanner system and control room located on the first floor of the main hospital. The scanner was at the end of its useful life, and the hospital planned to replace it with a new unit, which impacted the heating, mechanical, and plumbing systems in the control room.
The project consisted of analyzing the existing conditions and establishing the requirements to install the new CT scanner. Our team conducted and documented a detailed survey of the existing mechanical and plumbing systems, adjusting the plumbing systems to accommodate changes in layout required by the new scanner. We retrofitted and rebalanced the existing HVAC system to meet new demands and configured the architectural changes needed to accommodate the required clearances around the new scanner.
PRIME AE’s detailed engineering services allowed for the successful update of the SPEC CT scanner, supporting the health center in furthering its mission of providing the highest level of patient care through medical innovation to continually improve the health of the people of Pennsylvania.
