Clyde Morris Boulevard, a prominent thoroughfare in Daytona Beach, Florida, stands out as one of the most unique corridors in Volusia County. Its diverse array of uses and assets are vital to economic growth, enhancing lifestyle, and capturing the essence of the vibrant coastal region. The corridor connects vital elements such as two colleges, multiple research parks, a hospital, residential areas, commercial establishments, an airport, and entertainment venues.
Recognizing the significance of these key uses, the constituents along the corridor, including Volusia County, the City of Daytona Beach, and the Florida Department of Transportation, embarked on a collective endeavor to envision a new future for Clyde Morris Boulevard that prioritizes safety, supports the region’s economic vision, and provides improved pedestrian opportunities.
PRIME AE provided the planning expertise and facilitated public engagement to shape the vision for a “Complete Street”, a vision that was embraced by all stakeholders. To realize this vision, our team reduced lane widths, expanded infrastructure for pedestrians, reduced speeds, and created a “themed” corridor to include landscape architectural improvements.
This work exemplified the synthesis of design, engineering, and a series of workshops that served as the baseline for preparing construction documents and implementing the project. PRIME AE overcame key challenges such as constrained rights-of-way, a strict limit on property acquisitions, and considering the needs of the community through innovation, coordination and creatively leveraging regional benefits. The result is an enhanced urban corridor that fulfills the community’s aspirations.
