The Brooklyn Bridge stands as one of the most renowned structures in the United States. The suspension/hybrid cable-stayed bridge spans the East River and connects Manhattan and Brooklyn. Its crucial role as a transportation hub sees a daily influx of over 100,000 cars, 4,000 cyclists and 10,000 pedestrians. PRIME AE was contracted to provide Biennial inspection for this landmark structure, utilizing the AASHTO Bridge Element Method of Inspection in accordance with NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Manual.
Our team carries out extensive field Inspections, examining various components such as approach spans, anchorages, suspended spans, trusses, main cables, suspenders, and main towers. Our team is performing 100% hands-on inspection on all Fracture Critical Members and special emphasis details as per the plans and NYSDOT guidelines.
The equipment, techniques, and tools our team utilizes include underdeck travelers to inspect the primary members and underside of deck, D-meter to determine steel members thickness, dye-penetrant tests to discover cracks, borescopes to inspect hard-to-access places, rope access to inspect main towers and cable, and various aerial lifts ranging from 35’ to 150’.
Given the significance of this project, seamless scheduling and adherence to the highest safety standards is vital. Our team works closely with several government and local agencies such as NYSDOT, NYCDOT, US Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard, NYPD, MTA, NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, and other entities on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. We oversee lane closures and work zone traffic control in strict adherence to the NYSDOT guidelines and the latest MUTCD Manual to make sure the safety of all travelers and workers, reporting any serious conditions immediately to the NYSDOT Regional Office using their unique flagging system. The QC Engineer conducts frequent field visits to execute on-site team reviews, on-site emergency condition assessments, and to enforce the strict technical and safety requirements. PRIME AE is proud to contribute to the ongoing safety, maintenance, and integrity of this historic national landmark, which has withstood the test of time for well over a century.
