2020-2021 Biennial Bridge Inspection of Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Approach Structures

PRIME AE provided structural and safety inspection of the Verrazano-Narrows Approach Structures on the Staten Island and Brooklyn sides of this world-famous structure, followed by preparation of NYS DOT and TBTA reports in accordance with NYSDOT standards, TBTA guidelines, and all applicable federal manuals.

Inspections were conducted using AASHTO Element Level inspection techniques, including AASHTO quantity calculations, and condition state evaluations. The inspectors reviewed available plans, assessed and updated structure inventory and appraisal database as needed. Work also included load rating verifications, and updates, as per inspection findings.  The NYSDOT proprietary BDIS Software was used to prepare and submit the DOT reports. Yellow Flag Reports, Safety Flags with Prompt Intermediary Action Reports, and Maintenance CMR Reports were issued on a regular basis. Two emergency inspection reports were issued for the Drainage Pipes Inspection. Numerous TBTA reports were prepared to describe in detail the observed conditions of paint, bearings, overhead concrete, and other critical elements.

In addition to the biennial and interim bridge inspections, PRIME AE’s services included the complete inspection of over 350 overhead sign structures, light towers, camera towers, and lighting structures including: 30 overhead sign structures; six cantilever sign structures; four ground mounted sign structures; four high mast light towers; eight cameras’ poles; one flagpole; and 309 light poles.

Schedules, progress forms, as well as various time and budget tracking forms were submitted to TBTA on a regular basis. As part of this project, cost estimates were prepared for all repairs recommended by inspectors, as well as the PowerPoint presentation, describing in detail all the significant findings.
