It’s National Women in Construction (WIC) Week and PRIME AE is proud to celebrate the women who are making an impact in our industry. This year’s WIC spotlight is Brittany Meekins, Office Engineer, on-site at MDOT State Highway Administration’s District 2 Office in Chestertown, MD.
Why did you choose the construction industry?
I didn’t really choose the industry; I was in college when my father who works in Utilities told me of an opening in Construction as an Inspector and I decided to apply for the job.
When did you realize you wanted to work in construction?
As far as MDOT SHA goes Construction is all I’ve ever known, and I can’t imagine leaving the Construction world.
What has been the most surprising part of being a woman working in construction?
The surprising thing is the number of women who are in construction working hard in leadership roles.
What challenges have you experienced within the construction industry and how did you overcome them?
There are always challenges for women in primarily male careers. You overcome them by keeping your head high and doing your job to the best of your ability.
What is your favorite part of your career?
My favorite part of my career is seeing projects come to completion. Watching them from beginning to end is a phenomenal thing to see.
