The Thomas J. Hatem Memorial Bridge is a four-lane bridge carrying U.S. Route 40 across the Susquehanna River. This 1.5-mile-long bridge, the oldest owned and operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), opened in August 1940.

The reh

abilitation of the Hatem Bridge consists of the removal and replacement of the existing deck with partially filled grid deck using lightweight concrete; parapet replacement; adding C.I.P median barrier across the entire length; various structural steel repairs to the floor beams, box beams, girders, and stringers; replacement of rocker bearings with multi-rotational pot bearings; beam pedestal replacements; and full containment to repaint the lower box chords and the

floor beams throughout the entire structure.

PRIME’s Project Supervisor is overseeing the team of four inspectors, three of which are MDTA inspectors. Working with the MDTA Project Engineer, PRIME is performing the daily construction inspection for this most sensitive project. PRIME is also responsible for coordinating the progress meetings, maintaining the construction schedule, processing monthly estimates, reviewing change orders, keeping the MDTA apprised of all construction-related issues, and has developed the critical relationship necessary with the contractor to ensure the repairs are completed in accordance with the

contract details and to ensure the successful completion of this project.
