Phase 2 extends the current Phase 1 project 11.6 miles from Wiehle Avenue (Fairfax County, Virginia) through the Washington Dulles Airport International Airport terminal to Route 772 (Loudoun County, Virginia). The construction consists of 8.6 + miles of at-grade track, 3 + miles of elevated track on a post-tensioned segmental concrete structure, 5 at-grade stations, and 1 elevated station including 9 traction power substations, 6 tie breaker stations, communications, and train control equipment.

PRIME will be in-charge of Quality Assurance for the construction of this $1.17 billion Design/Build project and will also be performing structural and civil design services for the JV Team.

This 3-year contract is expected to start in July 2013. It will require the inspection of approximately 450 bridges and could potentially include nearly every structure type, including long span deck and through trusses, large interchanges at major state routes and interstate highways, the new “Q bridge,” confined space structures such as box girders and long culvert structures, as well as movable swing, bascule, and vertical lift bridges. It is anticipated that services for LRFR load ratings will also be provided.

PRIME was also recently selected by ConnDOT to provide preliminary engineering and final design services for the studies and rehabilitation of the Gold Star Bridge #03819, which is Connecticut’s largest bridge. It includes fracture critical G-F-S spans and long span deck trusses and an overall length of 6,000 feet and over 500,000 square feet of deck area.

PRIME will provide bridge inspection and engineering services to ConnDOT from its Rocky Hill, Connecticut office.

for the “Slide-Rule Packin’ Mamas: Honoring World War II’s Women Aeronautical Engineers Event.” Elizabeth Royster, PE, SI, Transportation Engineer with PRIME’s Columbus, Ohio office, spearheaded the year-long effort to organize and run this event last fall at The Ohio State University.

The event included the author/speaker Jean-Vi Lenthe, daughter of a WWII Aeronautical Woman Engineer, and a panel of WWII aeronautical women engineers from Curtiss-Wright who still reside in Columbus today, including a 95-year-old draft room supervisor.

The Central Ohio Society of Women Engineers will also be applying for an International Professional Program Award for this event through the Society of Women Engineers this summer. The international awards will be announced at the Society of Women Engineers’ conference in Baltimore, Maryland in October.
